Dear Prospective Member or Guest,
When JD or ‘Doc’ as he is known to the military community, approached me to write a testimonial about my time at his gym. I was very honored, however I was confused as what exactly to write about. I wanted to relate to as many people as I possibly could, so what better way than to just be honest with y’all and share my story.
At an early age, and when I say early I mean 8 years old, I decided I wanted to be in the military. Since then, it has become my lifes goal to attending and successfully complete Ranger School. I enlisted in the military while attending the University of Cincinnati, and I began to exercise and lift to prepare my body and mind for the challenges of the Army. The beginning of my training included the “traditional” weight lifting workout. I would to the gym and lift chest/triceps, then back/ biceps, followed by shoulders/traps then finally legs. It was a rinse, reuse, repeat cycle and I really enjoyed it but soon I began to want something else. I needed something more, something that was not only going to make me look good but something that was going to push me and make me stronger. One day one of my buddies Mike said, “Hey man you should check out CrossFit.” We began lifting in his garage. It was good, but it lacked programming and guidance. Around April of 2013, I began looking around the tristate area for CrossFit gyms. I came across “CrossFit Y’all” in Florence Kentucky. I emailed the owner JD and a day later I hit my first workout of the day.
I remember coming in to do the baseline and thought I was going to crush it. I remembering doing it and it crushed me, physically, mentally and emotionally (I even threw up after). From then I was hooked. From the moment I walked in, I could see Doc’s passion and dedication to his community. I knew this was a place I wanted to train. Later that week, I began to tell Doc my goals and he supported me 100% and then some. He saw my desire to succeed and he wanted me to succeed as much as I did. Every day I entered the gym, I was challenged physically, mentally and spiritually. Doc is one of the reasons I am where I am today. He pushed me to do things I didn’t want to do, but knew I needed to in order to maintain site of what is important.
In May 2014 I moved to Ft. Benning to begin my Army Career as an Infantry Officer. Since I have been here I’ve yet to find a gym as great as the one I call home. The people are what make the gym so special. I can without a doubt say that my time lifting at CrossFit Y’all, was the most fun I have had with fitness and is one of the things I miss most about home . The athletes and staff there are like a second family to me. Even though I am 583 miles away, Doc and I still talk daily. I know if I ever needed anything, he would be here or do his best to help. Knowing that means the world to me, because finding that kind of commitment from a trainer, or as I’ve come to know him a friend, is a rarity in most gyms or let alone in most relationships.
Whether you are an experienced lifter looking for a new home, a parent trying to improve your lifestyle to keep up with your kids, or someone who has never touched a weight a day in your life, CrossFit Y’all/Florence Barbell Club is the place to be. If you have any questions or hesitations feel free to contact me, and I will gladly share more of my experiences. My email is listed below.
